Do you think the Oscars are irrelevant and need to stop being broadcast?

Last year, or two years ago, I realized the Oscars were a waste of my time. There are so many great performances in popular movies that get ignored because they are too commercial or not artsy. I was reading the New York Times' analysis of the Oscar nominees and who would likely win, and I was disgusted. Robert Downey Jr. did a superb job in Iron Man, yet did not get nominated for that. He got nominated for his stupid, joke role in Tropic Thunder????!!!!I could go on, but you know what I'm talking about. The Oscars are clearly for artsy rich people and wannabe film snobs that don't live in the same world as most people. I don't even like the People's Choice Awards either, they are pretty terrible too. It's the awards show for the most over-marketed movies, pretty much.Do you feel the same way about the Oscars? Do you not like seeing the movies you liked get ignored, time and time again?

It's the opposite way around.. There are so many great performances in non-popular movies that get ignored because not enough people have seen them and the academy is embarrassed to say that they didn't understand the film.In fact, thats what the Oscars are about today - popularityEither way, I love Robert Downey Jr. and I enjoyed his performance in BOTH movies- Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, but both are a joke and should not be nominated for anything.

My record of correctly picking winners is terrible. It's just fun to see Johnny Depp. That's about it.

Yes, or leave it to the "Rich & Famous!" I don't bother to watch those either. To me it is mere publicity for the Actors with alot of glamour.

Hey, I kinda agree with a lot of what you said, about how some actors get ignored, but I think they really do try to look at performances which could have been hard to play. For example, Robert Downey Jr's character in tropic thunder i'm guessing was harder to play than his character in iron man, because he had to play a completely different person. I belive the that the actors who are noticed e.g Brad Pitt etc... are in the limelight for a reason, they got to where they are because of their talent, because they are good actors. I used to think kind of the way you are thinking, but then I realised that really, it's just down to good raw talent. People are always going to have something to say about those in the limelight. As you mentioned films such as iron man, those kind of films are not always taken so seriosly in the AWARDS WORLD, but they tend to look at more DRAMATIC performances, performances which moved and touched people, which made us cry... actresses like Meryl Streep have done very good acting performances, thus why she has won so many great awards...I could go on and on about this subject as I myself am an aspiring film director, but i'll say no more.....

It is scheduled for Sunday, February 22, 2009, at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California.http://81stoscarawards.tk/Watch Live Online.
