Honestly I think it's captivating.

It's like a giant ancient schizophrenic battle scarred monster that keeps fighting with its self and tripping over its tail while battling off it's enemies and evolving into new forms.

So many civil wars, assassinations, usurpers, tyrants, wars, political rivalries, spectacular tragedies, and what's more is that it was never static. It's like every century it changes to something that is completely different, from paganism and democracy to monarchy and autocracy and Christianity. It can even be argued that it lived on for hundreds more years after 467 in the Byzantium empire, but really the Byzantium empire was nothing like the early Roman republic. I mean, the Byzantium empire fought alongside the English in the crusades, and that was basically a direct continuation of the Roman republic 1000 years ago.

I think it's greatest threat was from within, if only it could have stayed how it was during the 1st century. but that wouldn't be interesting at all, that would be boring! That's why the Roman empire has to be the most intriguing of the lot.
What's more is it's great rise to power through the Italian peninsula then to the rest of Europe and even Africa and then the Western Empire's spectacular collapse.

Plus the soldiers just looked plain cool.
