hi... i think it was really weird that rafael nadal should not even get to the quarter finals. although that's impossible because of course he wanted his 5th... but i can't help feeling weird. does anyone share my opinion?

Yeah and it wasn't just Nadal.There were many upsets this year.Novak ,Murray bowed out in the early stages and the top 4 comprised of lower seeds

Yeah, I agree with you, Nadal is tooooooo tired and getting older, which is not sustainable for him to play that way.

@seah

excellent analysis, that's precisely what happend. Söderling with his height of 6'4 has no problems to smash these high topspin balls of Rafa, this is indeed what he loves. in contrary Fed held the balls deep with his slices what gave Söderling much more problems.

Rafa is a simple brute force player and time will tell how long he can do that.

nothing was weird at the FO this year. favourites may fall early and "nobody's" may go through to the final. we've seen this already so many times.

Yes, everyone think of French champion 2009 should be belong to Nadal because he played so well in Monte Carlo, Rome, Barcelona (all clay tournament) and became runner-up in Madrid (lost to Federer). Why can't he even went through quarter-final...???

The main reason is that he was too confident. Do you remember how he defected Hewitt in third round so easy by straight set, without even sweating?

So, when he played on against Soderling in fourth round, I think he also think that he can easily beat him by straight set. Do you agree with me?

Frankly speaking, he was not in his form that day. Nadal like to play high ball. This give chance for Soderling to smash the ball and make him run here and there... finally he was so tired to return the ball.

Do you notice that when Federer beat Nadal in Madrid, Nadal always perform a weak return and finally he lost that game.

Murray also use such method to beat Nadal in US Open and many ATP tournament. Do you notice?
