I have seen it before in some people around me they hate to think you might be more successful than them they would rather all your plans fail they dont like it when you think big. I also read an article recently in which Jeremy Clarkson said.

I don’t yearn for many aspects of the American way but they do seem to have this dreadful bitterness under control. When they see a man pass by in a limousine, they say: “One day, I’ll have one of those.” When we see a man pass by in a limo, we say: “One day, I’ll have him out of that.”

When i see someone in a really nice car house etc. i think well done youve got your head down and done something with your life.

Unfortunately not everyone is on my wavelength why are people more for success in America than they are here in England.

Thanks in advance and all answers are welcome.

10 points best answer. :)

I would agree with you and say that the Clarkson metaphor is pretty accurate. I have encountered it in my own family and remember a conversation that went something like:

“Are you going into the docks like your dad, son?”

“Er, no. I was thinking of staying on at school, getting some qualifications and making a career in local government or the civil service.”

“Ohhh! Getting ideas above our station, aren’t we, lad?”

I won’t say that I have met anybody who was jealous of my achievements but I have come across a few in the 1970’s who threw themselves across my path to try and prevent me leaving the proletariat. The working class has always been its own worst enemy.

British people as a general rule like to build their peers up, so they can knock them down. The media are especially good at this.

Some people are simply never content, and this often comes from those who have it all, not wanting those without to do well.

Success in Britain it seems, is only for those with the right parentage, schooling and background. The upper middle classes are jealous, coniving and ruthless is their pursuit of wealth and status, and begrudge any form of success achieved by the lower classes.

Americans, on the other hand are good at looking after each other's interests and like to share in their own and other's success.

Sorry, but I completely disagree with you. America has got a vile success culture in which people are considered somehow "better" just because they are rich. At least in this country we have a healthy cynicism about that sort of nonsense. Considering how some of those "successful" people have just f*cked up the economy through their greed, we're right to distrust them. The people I admire do something for society. Nurses and firemen may earn a lot less than estate agents or "entrepreneurs' but they're better for our society. If I see someone with a "nice house" I just assume they have a well-paid job. So what? Have they really done anything with their life?
