Do you think sequels to movies should be abolished?

Title of the thread is "Do you think sequels to movies should be abolished?" - over-riding tone was 'Yes they're sh*t'; my rebuttal was one word - Aliens - a great movie (though not as good as the first one ;))

Alex came back with "Two worRAB: Jurassic Park" perhaps suggesting in an 'oh so smart' way that it doesn't take a sequel to make a bad movie ;) :)

I think it depenRAB on the story of the first movie whether it has enough steam to produce a continuing stories that will inspire interest the audience to return for a sequal. The first god father movie had an excellent script which allowed the other movies to follow.

I think a lot of the disney sequels are rubbish. Eg Beauty and the Beast II belles enchanted xmas and also pocahontus II. Having said that there have been many sequels which have done incredibly well eg Simbas pride and Toy Story 2. I think it all just depenRAB on how desperate the makes are for money and how much time and effort they have to put into the making of these films.

The Back to the Future Trilogy was quite good - but I think that most sequels are uneccessary - they add nothing new to the story.

The Matrix sequels just confused me more than the original one did.

interesting topic as some sequels are just a tired rehash of the original and they are not worth watching but to abolish them would limit the possibility of a classic turning up such as Godfather II or terminator 2.
Its a similar position to tv spinoRAB, some work some don't. You just have to wait for the reviews before going to see them.

I would hate to see a remake of To Kill a Mockingbird...it is such a classic and so much purely a product of its time. If they felt they had to, I could see Tom Hanks in the GP role though (it certainly would be a challenge to any actor!).

Went to a sneak preview of the new Steven Spielberg film (staring Tom Hanks) called "The Terminal" last night. I really enjoyed it and can highly recommend it. I believe it opens the end of next week.

I also heard some people there talking about a sneak they attended of "The Notebook" (James Garner and Genna RowlanRAB) and am looking forward to this film.

Higlander is a very good example. "There should have been only one"

Highlander (Absolutley Brilliant)

Highlander II: The Quickening (Now The Story Gone Crazy)

Highlander 3: The Sorcerer (This Could have been No 2)

Highlander Endgame (Please No More)

Granted, a lot of sequels are rubbish but if it weren't for sequels we wouldn't have filmathons of:

Star wars
LOTR
Indiana Jones
Back to the Future
Ghostbusters
Terminator
Austin Powers

The sequels aren't necesarily better (although I will argue that when it comes to LOTR) but there's nothing I like better than shutting myself in with my husband and dedicating an evening/weekend to one of the above.
