Without regulations, they will simply portray their owner's political bias.

With regulations, they might portray the government's current bias.

I am somewhat ambivalent on this. On the one hand absolutely not because we do not need the Constitution trampled on more than it is being trampled on currently. However on the other hand because so many journalist refuse to act with integrity and honesty it gives rise to argument for at least a self policing consortium. In your question we already have the government ownership of the (back) pocket media, e.g. NBC and the White House
