Do you think my doctor is an idiot? (Xanax)

I have been to 3 other doctors prior to going to my current doctor. I was already been diagnosed with ADD before, and I'm taking Adderall for it. I went to this current doctor for my mood problems. I have depression, OCD, and anxiety disorder. I was put on an antidepressant at first which didn't do anything for me. I was expecting to be put on another antidepressant this time around. Instead my doctor prescribed me on Xanax.

From what I understand, Xanax is like Valium. It's supposed to kind of mellow you out. Here's the thing: I told my doctor that I DON'T suffer from panic attacks. My body actually remains pretty calm most of the time. My problems with anxiety are things like constant thinking, depersonalization, OCD, and constant irritability. I am not seeing how something like Xanax is going to help with that.

I don't know much about Xanax, so maybe I'm wrong here. I'm not saying it can't help with some things. Maybe it would help with my irritability, and my mood swings. But I am just not seeing how of all things to be prescribed....Xanax is what I need. A long time ago I was given Valium when I had a rare anxiety attack. All it did was make me tired and physically calm. It did not help my thought process, or anything that was going on in my head. It simply controlled my physical reaction when I was having an anxiety attack.

Have I gone to yet another idiot doctor? I have switched doctors SO many times, and I keep on getting these people who have no clue what they're even talking about. Does Xanax seem like a smart choice in my case?

leoball,

If some of your problems under the urabrella term of anxiety are problems with "constant thinking", "depersonalization", and constant "irritability" Xanax is indeed a very appropriate medication for these issues.

The pharmaceutical monographs for Xanax specifically say that it is indicated for the above 3 problems.
They even mention depersonalization specifically. It's also prescribed for what they call "Vigilance and Scanning", which involves "constant "thinking".
Its also good if you feel on edge in general, if you startle easily, have difficulty concentrating, have problems falling or staying asleep.

This doctor is not an idiot.

Give Xanax a try. It may really help!

Thank you very much.

I was a bit worried because I know that Xanax can make you more depressed. I already have bad depression. On top of that, I am on Adderall which makes my depression worse during the crash. I don't need a 3rd medication contributing to my depression.

I will give Xanax a try. Hopefully it will help with something.

I hope it works for you! It SHOULD help out with some of your symptoms. I don't have panic disorder, but I do feel panicked at time when I'm very anxious. I find that Xanax of course helps this, but it does also help calm my thoughts so I'm not overthinking.

Before Xanax, I struggled with depression in the past and have been doing much better, but I still have hard days. My anxiety was getting worse too and starting to really interfere with my life, so I talked to my doctor. I had tried antidepressants once in the past and didn't like them (Cyrabalta- made me ONLY tired and not happier). This time around, I'm on Prozac regularly and take Xanax only when needed. LOVE IT!! Perfect corabination for me. The Prozac helps my thoughts a LOT. I just find that I'm not constantly thinking and worrying when I don't need to be. I don't get stressed as easily. Thus, I am calmer and happier! I feel great and I plan to stick with Prozac. I hardly ever need the Xanax, but I take it on days I feel more anxious than usual and feel that I need something stronger (for example, on a day I saw a doctor and found out I have to have hernia surgery, or just a random anxious day). Many people take Xanax only as needed, and some take it regularly. I'd recommend just sticking with a lower dose so you don't get dependent on it. I started with low doses of both Prozac and Xanax. With Xanax, I only take half a pill at a time and it works fine!

Hope this helps :) Good luck and I hope you can feel more relaxed!
