How much of it is luck, do you think?
I mean, maybe it's someone's first day trudging through the slush pile. Maybe it's the morning and he/she isn't bored out of her mind ordoesn't know what to expect or likes to read with an open mind. Maybe that person will move on the manuscript to the big guys...
Maybe it'll be a person who particularly enjoys the very specific genre you're writing. (Like adventure with a bit of science fiction and a small romance. Or something.)
