The point was, it was supposed to be funny that he acted like that but was not gay. But since the TV show was on in the early 70's (I don't know when the movie was made exactly) there could not be any gay characters on TV. Tony Randall, who played Felix on TV, and was apparently straight, went on to play one of the first openly gay characters on an 80's show called "Love, Sidney" or something like that.
