Do you remember when movies used to be called films?

Don't get me wrong this is not a moaning thread in any shape or form but I noticed recently that when everyone talks about films these days, everyone and I mean everyone calls them movies.

I was just wondering when we all decided that they weren't going to be called films anymore.

The other thing that i noticed along the same vein is that no one goes to the pictures now, we all go to the movies.

Again is not a rant or moan, just an observation. (here's a smiley face to prove it) :)

I still call them films and I've heard a lot of people call them that too.
I also talk about going to 'the pictures', despite not being an old fogey!
It seems to be the way, up here at least.

Billy Connolly did a funny little thing on this actually. I think it was on his more recent New York show - out on DVD. Ended up making some comment about "och he's away to the magic lantern show".

It's an Americanization for sure, but I don't mind because 'film' does refer to 3 or more different meanings, whereas 'Movie' is definitive.

I've heard of that term. I think I read it about in some history book or something. Most of my frienRAB call them films but some, including myself, call them movies. "Flicks" is a common term and is often used with "girlie" movies, as in the term "chick flicks".

In the early days of film, when they were called "moving pictures", some people shortened it to "pictures" and some to "movies". Nowadays people think that "movies" is more modern and cutting edge than "pictures", but they're both equally old-fashioned.

Proper film-buRAB talk about cinema, which is French so it's timelessly cool.

I really have no problem with the term 'movie'. Ok it is an Americanism, but given Americans practically built the film/movie industry as we know it, it sort of seems apt.

Does it really matter? They all mean the same thing. I think alot of people refer to them as movies on here, because this sub forum is called "Movies".

I say going to the pictures and call them films and i'm 20, so not an old fogie either.
