Do you read books that make you cry in public?

no, i can't. i bought the book the lovely bones at a thrift shop not knowing what it was about and carried it around with me, reading whenever i had a chance. i was at a department store waiting for my mom and i took out the book to read a little. that part was just so sad, i had to keep closing the book and composing myself. people must've thought i was a freak. it's hard to anticipate if a book is gonna make you cry. you better have a backup just in case.

How do you deal with that? I tend to read very emotional books in very public places, like delis or crowded waiting rooms.. I try not to cry, but it's hard when the author is describing how their father abandoned them/pet died/etc.

uh, when you get to the sad part, take a 1min break and in the meanwhile, think of something else to take your mind off the topic.

Hope that helps.

I''m not a crier cause i just don't feel comfortable crying so i've been able to learn to control it. it has only happened to me once crying about a book. I went to the bathroom and stayed in there until i calmed myself down and i didn't read the book until i got home.

I haven't come across many books that made me cry. One, Ithaca, I read very late at night so no one saw what floods I was in. I haven't read anything that made me cry since that, when dear old Argos waited for Odysseus to come home, then died.

I find writing more emotional, like when I kill off characters. I usually cry then.
