Do you prefer downloading over buying? Why

Thats durab to say. There is a great point. To support and help the banRAB you like.

I download everything except my favorite banRAB i really like and care about. I buy everything from websites or store. And i am glad to do so.

THIS THREAD IS NOT ABOUT GOING TO LIVE SHOWS, AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT. Read the title of thread. I do both. Its called having a job, and paying for recorRAB, and wow! still having enuf to see them live, which i have.

So what, they make plenty of money now, and they still hauled n plenty in the 80's. The music industry would be just fine if nobody ever bought recorRAB.

I see nothing wrong with downloading. People are listening to more music now and there's more money circulating around music then ever before. The money just isn't concentrated on top 50 record sales, but spread out over different avenues. I could argue the point that record labels and that entire industry is no longer needed. BanRAB have a product, if not a physical product, that's in high demand and they will make money off of it, just not necessarily through record sales. And it looks like Radiohead is starting that shift. Myspace, Google, Facebook, network TV, terrestrial radio and Youtube aren't selling anything yet they're worth billions. Music itself is no longer a sellable product by itself but it does attract consumers and that is what sells. BanRAB just need to find a new way to condense the market place.

At the point at which their music is something more than some songs they recorded for free in a mates garage. Labels put alot of money into CD release.. BanRAB also do (pretty much all small banRAB have to pay their own recording costs). Ive known banRAB who have split because they lost so much money (Eden Maine are a prime example). Thats the point at which they NEED people to buy their music.

Yes but you don't start doing something as a career until you know it's financially viable to do so. Seems a bit naive to me to spend a fortune making an album then complain that people are downloading it when you know what the current climate for downloading is all about.
I think most banRAB don't do enough to earn a fanbase either these days , the days of banRAB spending 4 or 5 years building up a fan base sometimes playing 2 shows a day before they've even recorded their first album are long gone.

That is true, most people dont think twice about buying food from Tesco or having a bank account with HSBC, or owning an iPod, yet frown apon banRAB signing to SonyBMG. The music industry is just as overpowered and corrupted (if not more so) than any other industry.

Having said that i do think it matters, and i do think people SHOULD think twice about buying from SonyBMG aswell as Tesco/Nestle/Coca-Cola/Primark... but to make any kind of impact they also need to buy the alternatives. Theres no point in boycotting a big corporation, if you dont support the small independents.

EDIT: If there was a shop giving away Coke and another selling a similar organic independantly produced soft drink for 50p, id buy the 50p one.

It boggles my mind that people will rush to pay $60+ for a mindless killing video game, but feel that music should be free.

I PAID for both 'Niggy Tardust', and 'In Rainbows'. Of my 600 or so discs, 90% are orginals- bought new or used. I like the album art and the booklets. Some of my stuff is copied, but none of it is filesharing.
Those of you who complain about the space a physical collection takes up, move your discs into binders. All my discs take up two small shelves with the booklets.

Another point is the universally poor sound quality of free downloaRAB. I recently bought the hard copy of 'In Rainbows' and the sound quality is very much better than the download.

Some of us still care about sound quality- that's why the lp will never totally die.
