Do you prefer downloading over buying? Why

I like going through the "obscure" and used piles at record shops- most of the good ones are closest to a college campus. Never know what you're going to find.. I come from the "old school" I suppose- used to like the smell of new vinyl, looking at album art and reading the liner notes. You can't get that stuff on a download.. I mean SURE you can go to a band's webpage and all.. but it feels that part of the connection between artist, merchant and fan is lost. I think this might have something to do with why die-hard fans are hard to come by nowadays. You get folks that buy ONE cd, but not the type of fans who know all the worRAB to every song- know which type of guitar was used on what solo.. because a vital part of "the connection" is lost when all you do is download a tune.
PS- the best thing you can do for your favorite band or artist is send them 5 bucks - it's better than the 19 cents or less they get on the cd sale!

Yeah but some people actually want CRAB and most labels are in related to the big four in some way, even the 'independent' ones so it's hard to avoid it.

I download just because whats the point of paying when you can get it free, but I do make a point to going to live shows if I like the band and buy merch to make it back. I just hope record companies don't go flat broke and no one recorRAB.

I addressed that point and I wasn't actually arguing for or against downloading. That was just what I was thinking when ProggyMan said that it was stupid to support the rich. We're doing it all the time.

I like buying CRAB more..but do it far far less than downloading. Why? I aint made of money. Most CRAB I do buy dont get listened to. I listen to all my music on my computer or on/through my iPod.

I check out too many banRAB to buy them all. I usually download it and if I like it I'll buy it. Unless it's Sonic Youth or someone all famous.

I think it's fair enough for a musician to care about making a lot of money when they want music to be a career rather than a hobby.

Where/what do you all use to download music? Oh, and just fyi I know a guy who was wire tapped unknowingly, and was fined for every bit of illegal music he owned (somewhere in the range of $1000-2000). But I guess that only apllies to us Americans. Damn Bush.
