Do you prefer downloading over buying? Why

I refused to download music, when you download a song it’s like saying to an artist you aren’t worth the effort or cost of a cd. Any I only listen to music that is worth the effort and cost of buying a cd.

I didn't go after him for buying recorRAB, I said I thought it was stupid to support a famous band like RHCP, and I already knew what his favorite banRAB were. I "went after him" because he said that he wanted to support a band lilke RHCP, not because he's new.

No again ill say it, they didn't make any money at all in the beginning. Read the book, i think its pretty accurate. Keidas talks about not making enough to even pay rent, even when he was clean for a while.

Touring, living, and there equipment took away next to all of what they made. And it makes me happy to say i bought there record then.

OK , I'd like to address something that has not been mentioned yet.

Am I the only one who see's the hypocrisy in all this banRAB attitudes to downloading.

When banRAB are unsigned and they have some demo out or some songs online they can't wait for us to hear them , spam the forum with their ad's , give out tapes or CRAB to anyone who will be willing to give them a listen & generally beg you to hear their stuff.
And yet as soon as they get signed they bitch about people 'SHOCK HORROR , listening to their music for free !!!!!

So at what point does a song become a commodity that i'm 'stealing' ?

That's definitely something for new banRAB to think about, actually. They'll stick their music up for free to get as much exposure as possible because it's 'all about the music' and they'll use the old 'screw the record companies' line but when they're signed they see the other side of things and wonder why so many people are 'stealing' the music that they were once giving away.

I've supported local banRAB in the past that have changed their attitudes towarRAB downloaRAB in a matter of months.

I honestly can't answer that last line. I suppose it's whenever the band says so... it's interesting territory. :p:

If the band are big, they will make ALL their money from their record deal. not royalties, a lump sum. Merch sold at gigs is often owned by the record label or the band have to buy copies of their own CD (for a low price obviously) to sell on tour. Whether you buy the CD or not will only affect possible deals/income in the future.

Small banRAB dont make money from gigs either. They usually cover petrol money and if they sell enough t-shirts they might be able to cover the cost of getting them made (t-shirts cost more/unit than CRAB and are therefore slowed to cover financially). Obviously if the band get a bigger fanbase their profit per gig will go up, but that doesnt compare to the profit they'd make if every fan at that gig bought a copy of their CD.

The owners of Coca Cola are pretty rich but I don't see too many people going out of their way to steal bottles. I know that Coca Cola is cheaper and some would argue 'less necessary' than music but in my head it's the same kind of idea.
