Do you partake in Unashamed Animation Watching?

I've been fighting the "animation is for kids" battle for most of my life. I fought it with my parents in my teens and now that I live alone, I'm fighting it with my girlfriend.

But, still, I watch my cartoons and will continue to battle it. They seem to have no problems watching those stupid Madea movies so I feel a bit more intelligent.

My girl friend and I watched about 20 toons, from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 90s (Amaniac Eps) We are both over 50 and loved them..For those of you who haven't seen it..A Tail of Two Kittens..is a great one..good luck to all..

I can watch toons all day...all nite,,,worse things one can do..........

I have no shame whatsoever. Like others here, I have a few animated shows/movies on DVD (though DVD collection is more 50-50). Just about everyone I talk to in "real life" thinks cartoons are universal, and talk about/watch 'em whenever they can.

Seeing as it's my career I have no problem watching cartoons in the presence of people:p. Actually I've never really had to deal with anyone harping on me for watching "kids stuff" ever growing up now that I think about it.

I've always been a cartoon aficionado. But despite my cartoon watching having slacked up sometime in, like, the very late '90s, sometime before the 2000s began for the most part (with few exceptions like the original Shrek), I got back into watching some in the latter half of the 2000s. Therefore I never completely lost my zest for them. A while back, I bought one of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD sets and I also own a few of the animated Walt Disney Treasures. I have/own more live-action movie DVDs that range in most of the various ratings than I do that are animated now. My dad was harping on me, saying that I'm beyond those. However, I'd still buy whatever cartoons grab me. I'd say the only cartoons that can be consider too kiddie are any of those that are too dumbed down. I try not to care nor dwell too much on what others may think and let that get to me. Next time, should he harp on me again(because I plan on getting the other LTGC DVD sets eventually), I'll ask him, "then why'd you watch cartoons with me before I got into my teens and why would any parent watch with their kids for that matter, if that's really the case?" Then I'll add, "last holiday time, I heard A Charlie Brown Christmas playing on the t.v. in the kitchen and I know you and mama were watching that, so how do you explain that?" What I'm fed up with is, why is there still a constant, stigmal misconception about cartoons being exclusively kiddie fodder? Just what is it going to take exactly for that to end and convince others otherwise?

That's a good point. I think the reason why I'm too afraid to tell others, that I still enjoy cartoons, is that I'm worried of being made fun of. My sister did this to me, a few years ago, and I don't have the courage to tell her again. :crying:

I think many adults fall into the routine that cartoons are for kids and by, like age 12, they shouldn't watch them anymore. :( It'd be nice if more people would just accept people liking cartoons and move on. They don't have to love them too, but respect people that still enjoy them.

The day people realist cartoons are for everybody, is the day that companies stop commercialising the product exclusively to them.

I actualy just got into an argument with my mom, she keeps telling me that most kids my age (16) don't watch cartoons anymore. Which, based off of the people here, that has to be a lie. She makes me think I'm weird, and that I'm basically the only sixteen year old who likes cartoons. She thinks they're all annoying, she says she even hated them as a kid. But, she also thinks Looney Tunes were made for kids, even after the interviews from the directors that said they made them for their selves.

I think the only people I may tend to hide some of my toon watching from are certain members of my immediate family (who've given me a lot of grief about my toon watching) and a few others. I've been dealing with this since I hit my 20s and really started paying attention to anime and during the 90s when some epic animated shows appeared (BTAS, Gargoyles, etc.).

I've been hosting a panel at some Florida conventions for years on animated guilty pleasures (including anime) where the audience names favorites both past and present and it's usually quite a hoot. There's something pleasurable (and even therapeutic) about talking about this when there's no fear of ridicule. Those of you in the Tampa Bay area can catch my next panel at next week's METROCON.

Exactly, but I still find it odd that if they have kids of their own or any younger relatives, if there are any of those adults who still watch cartoons, then they'll only watch them with kids. I mean, why would some still watch them at all with kids regardless if that's truly what they think? There are less people in my nuclear family to harp on me about my cartoon viewing, since I don't have any siblings.

Ofcourse, now why didn't I think of that? That makes sense. Well then, how and why so that still hasn't happened yet? What would it take to convince the advertisers? I mean, if they gave some animated films the G rating, then how/why does the same not apply to other things animated outside the theatrical releases? That's another odd thing.

Well, we know you're not alone. If that were the case, nobody would frequent here and there'd be no need for this site, 'cause it would be irrelevant. I guess there are just some of those who have no funny bone at least for even once, which I guess I shouldn't talk, be surprised nor find far-fetched, since it took a while for me to find mine most of the time for a while then again. Not because I didn't like them or had anything against them at all, I just wasn't feeling that emotion. I reckon that there's just no sense in even trying to get through to some who just don't get it anymore, since that just seems to be such a waste and it probably wouldn't matter for me either anyhow if I tried telling my parents the same about the original audience for Looney Tunes.

Maybe adults watch them, just to spend time with the kids? I know my parents watched a lot of kids videos, with my sister and me as kids. I doubt they enjoyed them much.

Yeah, eventually as I came to be proud of it more, my family became to accept it. My dad grew to think of me as "the son he never had" and my mom thinks I should become a cartoonist if I love it so much. So what I learned is the only way for others to accept what you love is if you yourself accept it first.

I'm very open about my love of animation - and so is my girlfriend, who's introduced me to a number of shows I never would have found otherwise. Thanks to her, I can now geek out freely about "Avatar: The Last Airbender", "The Critic", "Clerks: TAS", "Phineas and Ferb", and "InuYasha". (Yeah, we're serious nerds.)

I'm 27 years old. Anybody who knows me, knows that I love animation. I'm not ashamed of it, but some people do talk about me for it, and I think I should be ashamed to love it. Not only do I love animation, all of my backpacks, wallets and boxers :D have cartoon characters on them. My room is full of cartoon character toys. I tell people that I still wake up on Saturday mornings and watch cartoons. But not the cartoons on cable. I have a lot of DVD's that are animated tv shows. So I make my own schedule. From eight in the morning, until twelve in the afternoon. Some people think it's cool, some people talk about me for doing it. Just this morning, my mom asked me when I was going to grow up. She's not the only one who ask me that. I'm a kid at heart, but I still take care of my adult responsibilites. So I don't see the problem. Making cartoons is what I want to do for a living. Watching cartoons (and drawing cartoons) provides escapism for me from the world and a crappy job. When I'm in my room watching or drawing cartoons, all is right with the world. Any problems I may have had at my job that day are gone.

One more thing. People say that people who love animation needs to grow up. But I gotta say. If this messageboard is anything to go by, we are very mature, compared to other website messageboards I go to. Some of the topics discussed on this site are down in a very mature way, without stupid and immature comments. Topics like Lindsay Lohan's arrest, or the death of Gary Coleman. While I look at the comments section of the same stories posted by the AP, and they are full of comments that us "immature" animation lovers should be making.

See, and that's what I love about this forum. It teaches me so much about not only animation but the business aspect of it as well. People who love cartoons and want to grow as animators also must be smart enough to understand the business side, a good counter argument to those that say cartoons are stupid and for kids. And the posts are done in a mature way (at least most of the time) while getting many laughs at people's sense of humor. People who take cartoons seriously are actually some of the most interesting people on the planet imo.

I don't hide my cartoon-watching when I'm at my parents' place, because they already know I'm a cartoon-fanatic. But when I was at my apartment at college and stuff, I'd usually watch in my room with the door shut. XD;; Thinking back, this was a little silly, since I'm also a notorious stuffed-animal collector, and those were visible from the hallway. :p
