do you need to have photoshop in order to use a drawing or graphics tablet?

Well, first of all you don't need photo shop, you can use other programs with it like dream-weaver, flash player and even paint! (That's how I tried my Genius tablet)
I don't know that kind of tablet, but remember: The tools DON'T make the artist.

i'm thinking about getting the wacom bamboo fun tablet for my birthday soon, but i don't have photoshop. it seems like that's what all the really good artists use, and i'm sure my parents don't want to spend the money on photoshop. i have jasc paint shop pro 8 and it works fine for editing pictures. i used to draw a lot with it using a mouse and it is definitely more sophisticated than just paint or whatever that comes with the computer.
so my question is do you think that i really need to have photoshop when i get my tablet, or is the program i have now okay?
and also is the bamboo fun a good tablet? i don't really know much about this stuff.

Nope, you definitel don't need photoshop, it works with several programs just like a regular mouse. It probably works specially with paint shop pro just as it works specially with photoshop, though im not sure. Definitely shop around because lots of tablets come packaged with other programs. My wacom tablet came with photoshop elements and corel draw! and probably a couple other things i dont use. So definitely look for a tablet with good amazon.com reviews and that comes with programs!
 
u can use a pen tablet still if u dont have photoshop. it feels a bit limited, but u can still have fun = ) u can use it for the simple drawing program thats installed to every compter, or u can use the pen as a mouse even. its good practice to steady ur hand while waiting till u can get photoshop.

the good news about getting a wacom pen tablet is that most versions already come with photo elements and photoshop combined. i bought a wacom bamboo tablet my self for about $200 that had that deal, and i love it = )
