Do you need an adaptor to change 2004 Silverado stereo?

Yeah, you don't need the $80 harness, thats a ripoff. Get the $5 harness or you should be able to get one at walmart for like $10. All you will lose is some of the features of the stock radio like the "warning chimes" you mentioned or maybe being able to dim the display, and none of that stuff matters.
 
If you are installing an aftermarket head unit, do you have to have the $80 adaptor? I don't care about the 'warning' chimes. Is that all I lose by using an online $5 harness?
