Do you love your pet fish as much as you would love a furry animal like a cat or dog?

I have just started fishkeeping and am surprised by how much emotion I feel for the cold blooded scaly creatures! A neon tetra doesn't have half the personality of a dog - so why am I so attached to my fish?
 
I used to have a tank in my bedroom, rather small tank, but a tank nonetheless, and I kept a male siamese fighting fish in it, beautiful fish.

I felt as much for that fish as I now do for my 2 ferrets :-)
