Whether or not gays should be allowed to marry has been hotly debated since 2004 when Bush used it as a main issue which defined his re-election bid. Pro-gay marriage people argue that gay couples should be allowed the same legal rights that straight couples have. Anti-gay marriage people say that the institution of marriage is reserved for male-female couples, and this institution should not be destroyed.
I have a solution that should make both sides happy. We keep the institution of marriage reserved for male-female couples. However, we create a new institution called farriage for gay couples. Two gays cannot get married, but they can get farried. Farriage allows the couple to have the same legal rights as a married couple. However, it is prohibited by law that a farried couple uses "marriage" to describe their relationship. Doing so risks the loss of their farriage license.
I trust that both sides of the debate will find my solution as an acceptable tradeoff which allows us to put this debate behind us and move on to more important issues like the economy and the war in Afghanistan. Thank you for your attention.
