Because it was not between only two states.
or because the confederates called it the war between the states, but since the Union won, we call it the American Civil War.

It was a war between two nations. The states that made up the Confederacy had left the Union and formed their own country.

Well, the South used to call it (even in schools) the War of Northern Aggression. That wasn't "right" either.

Well I would say because not all of the states in the confederacy were part of the United States at the time of the Civil war.
