I'm looking for the name/author of a comic of which I can only remember the plot. I know it came out anytime before 2003, and was also sold in a series of bundle books, and individual releases.
So like I said, graphic novel. The plot is that on a random day in a town a meteor passes over it. Several years later students are in a classroom taking pictures, and a slab of cement cracks from the ceiling and begins to fall. One young boy catches it and hold it over his head despite it weighing at least over 500 lbs. So basically everyone conceived when the meteor passed over are "Specials". Some with good abilities, i.e. mini supermen. To others who can either do nothing, or suck.
In the future alot of these people use there talents on a day to day basis. One is a superhero for a commercial enterprise, another's voice can allure people and thus she became an opera singer, and another was completely immune to damage, but due to that fact he was also numb, and wasn't stronger then anyone else so in turn he became fat and useless since he could only taste food.
So one day these "Specials" begin to die, one by one, someone is killing them. But when one dies, the energy redivides and they all become a little stronger. In the end the commercial superman was mind controlled by the Special who could speak to other people's minds, then they all try to make the world a better place. I've read the first two, who knows how many years ago. But, for the love of me I can't remember the name/ author.
The only thing that jumps out to me is the word "Specials" or maybe even "S.T.A.R.S."
