Do you know the title or author of this book?

I am desperately searching for a book I read quite a few years ago. I have a vague remembrance of the plot. I remember that in the beginning the main character of the book, a female, ran away. Later on she either hitch hikes with someone or picks up a hitch hiker. I don't remember which. She continues to meet a number of other people...the story continues. In the end the girl finally realizes that she is dead, I believe by suicide in the bathtub?

I believe the word "road" is somewhere in the title of the book, but I'm not entirely sure. So if you happen to have any more information about this book, that would be great! Thanks =)
