Do you know how far betta fish can see across a room?

I'm considering putting a cloth around my bettas tank because he's too hyper like on

If I put a book or a box, he flares at it until 5 minutes later when he realizes with his instincts that it's not moving.
 
sounds like mine, though mine isn't the usual B. Splendis [siamese] mine's hyperactive, so i moved the tank he's in to another room where i could give it natural sunlight and that seems to calmed him down untill i or an animal walks in then he flares right up, and swims back and forth for a while, or he'll just dart around.
there really isn't much you can do, and putting a cover over the tank is a bad idea because betta's require atmospheric air to survive not just gas exhange within the water.something that may help though is lower the lighting level, it calms them down quite a bit.
