Do you have to wash rice before you cook it?

I live in the USA, and my friend lives in Malaysia. She says that she always washes her rice before she cooks it, and then she throws it in the microwave. However, I have never washed rice in my life before I cooked it (and when I cook it I throw it in a pot with water).

So what's up, do you have to wash rice before you eat it?
 
in the states, you're probably getting a lot of pre-washed rice, like uncle ben's or something. but yes, most white rice should be washed before you cook it. brown rice doesn't require it as the shell is still there.
