Do you have to take classes before taking the permit test in California?

In California I know that you have to take classes after you have your permit, but what about before? Also if you do what class? and where is the best place to take it?
 
you have to take a drivers education course or something of that effect before you take your permit test.
you never actually drive a car unless you're getting your permit/license through your school, then i don't know if you get to drive a car or not.

you'll want to choose the drivers education class depending on where you live, cause some classes will sign you up for their behind the wheel, driving with an instructor classes (you have to be signed up for a class before you take your permit test).
just google it or something, i'm sure you'll come up with something.
you can take an online class or some schools offer actual in class classes. but most people take it online.
