Do you have to pay to lock your bike to a town parking meter?

We don't really have bike racks, so I need to lock it to a meter. However, do we have to pay? Do I put it on the sidewalk side or the roadside?

Thanks!

Call your city's public works department for an answer.

The fee is for use of the parking space on the street.

Make sure no one can lift your locked bike over the top of the meter first.

No, you don't have to pay anything. Just lock it to the meter with the bike on the sidewalk. Don't put the bike sitting on the street side because a car will hit it. The meters are for the parking spaces. You are not using the parking space so you don't have to pay. Now this is a general answer. Your specific town may have some law against locking to meters so you might want to check that out. But I have never seen a place where that was against the law. Oh and make sure you use a lock that can't just be lifted over the top of the meter. Good luck :)
