do you have to make certain modifications on a car if you want to race with it...

...legally in a track, if so....? if so what specificaly do i have to do to make sure that it wont break down on me, i have not even got into racing or taken any auto-shop classes and i want to get into speed but i have no one to go to my friends are scared and family disapproves i mentioned it was legal too
