Do you HAVE to get the 30 dollar media package with this Blackberry?

I am looking into getting a new phone, and I really want the Blackberry Curve 8310. I have AT&T. I heard that you have to get the 30$ per month Media package when you get this phone. My sister, however, told me that you can just get unlimited texting instead. Is this true? If I want this phone, do I HAVE to get the 30$ per month media package?
