For many years now I have been a massive fan of Tortoise, and I think they are criminally underrated - but then, such bands that deviate from the mainstream always will be I guess. As with most bands that experiment, their output veers wildly from album to album.
Tortoise - 'In Sarah, Mencken, Christ and Beethoven There Were Women and Men' (1998):

(This is one of their more accessible songs)
Do you have any other examples of experimental or avant-garde acts?
LOL "Yes AtS" - I bought 'Safe as Milk' by CB last week, yet to listen to it though. It was recommended and I am looking forward to it...
Lammy - Can are great; funny, I only recently started listneing to them too.
