do you have 3G coverage in your area?

that's probably the biggest thing keeping me from the iphone - the feeling that apple will introduce a hardware upgrade soon and make me feel like a douche.

note - they did it recently - i bought a Macbook Pro at launch. they upgraded the processors like 3 weeks after mine arrived; then upgraded them again to the core2duo a little later.

so, 3G around me is spotty - the county west of me has it, the county east of me has it for about 3 miles, but the county i live in doesn't have it at all. manhattan has it but i never noticed the difference on my blackjack.

people complain, but it really *isn't* mature in the US.

is that convincing enough for me to get an iphone now, i don't know

I just got the iPhone last night and honestly the edge network isn't that slow. Browsing the Internet with this thing is >*. If they do release another you could always find someone to buy the old one.

I have 3G everywhere from my house to work which is 52 miles away (of course there are some blank spots, but for the route I take to work (on a train) I have 3G 98% of the time.

I have 3G in pretty much every city I've been to for work, which includes Dallas, Houston, Covington/Cincinatti, Cleveland, and DC.

i've been using EDGE for a while now, before the upgrade that apparently happened, and i was never all that pissed off by it.

using 3G in the city / queens/brooklyn/bronx/ was a little quicker but nothing that really made me feel like it was something i couldn't live without

When I was with sprint I usually used my phone on the edge of their EVDO coverage and low speed. That caused me heavy battery usage and killed my speed as it switched back and forth.

I don't REALLY mind EDGE but it is slow. On the plus my battery life is MUCH MUCH better then my Treo or Q ever thought to be I just made a bookmark folder of the few news sites I visit with their RSS feeds. I visit those when I'm on Edge and if something catches my eye I visit the whole page.

edge does use less battery than 3g, that seems to be there reasoning thus far for doing this.

don't forget you still have wifi, which in our area is virtually blanketed everywhere. though that uses a lot of battery as well.

The Ifone is not 3g, and they will not offer a hardware upgrade.

they will just make the current model obsolete and release a 3g version..

Like you said, AT&Ts 3g coverage is embaressing compared to CDMA EVDO.

It's sad, but the ifone needs 3g to run at all. Edge sucks horribly on it.

I will stick with my blackberry from AT&T until 3G is better, and a 3g ifone is out. 3G was unnecessary for ANY mobile device, unless you were tethering - UNTIL the ifone.
