Do you hate the way our society is so caught up with popular culture?

I just can't stand how some people I know are so obsessed with celebrities and live their lives according to TMZ and People magazine? Am I the only person who feels like this?

IDK, I just think that life is too short and too precious to live envying others day to day, but that's just me. I was just curious to know what you guys on Y!A think about this.

I definitely agree with you!!
personally, i dont care if ----- gets another boob job or if ------is breaking up with --------!
LOL

It's a cycle you can't break. It's life. There is a thin line between news and gossip.

I agree. Celebrities are put on a pedestal and talked about all day.

"So and so went clubbing last night!"

So did 1000000000000000 other people!

But, the reason people put celebrities on a pedestal is because we see them as new age moral compasses. If a celebrity does charity work, we will too. Because instead of choosing amongst many charities, we choose amongst celebrities. Should we help dying children or dying whales? It's hard to answer that question. But if Brad Pitt is for saving children and George Clooney is for saving whales, it gets much simpler- Brad or George. And charity is just one example of how we use celebrities as a guide. A guide to how we dress, what is right and wrong.

"Oh my god, that Britney is out partying all day! That is so wrong!" It gives people a chance to idolize someone tangible. It gives people a chance to use them as a tangible moral compass. It's a subconscious thing, but something very common.
