any reason why you added that?

badgers are pest..rid them!

Badger holes are quite big. A small round hole (1 or 2 inches across) could be a field mouse, and something a bit bigger could be a rabbit - especially if you find holes which have been started and not finished. If it's rabbits you may see their droppings which look a bit like black currants! As for the back gate slamming I'd say that was probably the wind - I don't think an animal would do that! We don't have badgers in the garden but we do have mice, squirrels, rabbits, rats, hedgehogs, lots of birds including pheasants, and the occasional muntjac deer!

Could the digs be something else, like lovely foxes? Keep your pets in at night is all I can say. Maybe it's a ghost slamming your gates. Do you know who lived in the house before you?
Maybe there's an old pet cemetary in your garden? muahahaha....

only joking... :-P
