Do you ever wonder whether the question-er is being serious or not? And answer as...

...a joke, then wonder if..? you've offended them?

BQ: Is it better to be safe than sorry? ie. Is it better to always answer a question seriously and be on the safe side?

I always wonder whether the seemingly moronic right-wingers in the Politics section are actually just sarcastic sensible people making fun of Faux. It's hard to imagine that anybody could be dumb enough to think Obama is a socialist.

I've done this quite a few times when girls have asked me out before. I've still no idea whether they were serious or not, but we're still friendly after.

Yes- I have often given a jokey answer- only to re-read it and edit because I wonder if it could be interpreted incorrectly, offend someone, hurt someone's feelings etc.

I do this a lot -re-read and think -woah! That's a bit flippant -it could really upset someone and I change it accordingly. Not sure if I always get it right but life is too short to hurt people. I've got be really pi*sed off to hit back.

Nice to know someone else thinks about this!

I think a lot of people post 'joke' questions on here - someone here was asking how he could castrate himself. I treated it as a joke, but a part of my mind worries that he is serious and needs some help!

I rarely answer a question without some form of humour in it. I don't really care if it was a joke or not xD

I think that you make a good point here. Some of the questions are so daft, that they can't be serious but you are never sure.I always try to answer with humour if i can.

I give smart alec answers sometimes. Some of the questions are just so asinine I can't resist. I never give a mean answer to real questions, no matter much I think "but EVERYONE knows that!" You know, the whole 'there are no stupid questions' thing. Not everyone has the experience to know some stuff I think is elementary.But... some of the religious and political stuff is just so biased, I can't resist. I have seen stuff like "Why are all Republicans stupid?" I mean, no one wants an answer to that, they just want to start stuff. And on occasion the relationship stuff is so out there I get a bit nasty... some kid asked how to 'get even with Mom' when he had been stupid and I layed into him. But if something is really serious, this is not the best place to find out the answer. I think this is more like just talking to friends at a coffee shop or bar. You get some good info, some wrong info and some smart alec stuff. You have to chose what is worth using.

lmao???????????yup

hahha on yahoo answer it depends

sometimes i need points so i say watever or write something stupid....
but i try my best not 2 do that hahaha

it depends.....sometimes i say racist stuff and then...ppl get mad and sometimes ppl tell me racesit stufff,,,,

Sometimes the question is obviously a joke, other times the content of a question is very serious, but you never really know if that person is telling the truth. That's why I'm always very careful about answering serious questions, and I won't even attempt to answer unless I think I can provide a helpful answer. I think it's best to give helpful/serious answers although I've seen some terribly horrible and mean answers to questions that seem to be a genuine call for help.
