Putting fancy illustrated books aside for a moment... in buying books, do you find any relationship between the cost of a book and the quality of the writing you find inside?

No, not at all.

Then again, I buy most of my books used at half.com, so they are all pretty inexpensive already.

Nope. I can't believe how much flaky chick lit goes for. That stuff should be really cheap.
Some of the best books I have read have been under 5 bucks, , some of which I got for a few bucks on the sales rack.

Not at all. There are classics that I often find costing $7.99 and then on the next shelf a piece of... yeah... that costs $20. Although, there are books like those on painters that cost $60, yet that is because there is information about them as well as images of their works on quality paper. So.. I would say unless I am looking for a leather bound book (which those can be found cheap as well) or one with fine quality paper the price of the book does not necasserily describe its content. Look at Jack London books, they fetch for about $7-10 and their wonderful.
But if you are looking to buy usually costy books I would recomend half dot come. It is a branch of ebay where you can get amazing books for cheap prices.
