Do you donate money to bell-ringers in front of stores?

I'm bell ringing today. It's going to be interesting being on the other side of bell-ringing.
I always donate. I feel bad sometimes because it's only the pocket change and a few dollars.
I was reading about bell-ringing for the salvation army and about complaints people file.
and i mean, can you believe this- they complain about hearing the bell! i mean, you have to endure the ringing of bells for what, 10 seconds as you walk in or walk out of the store and people consider that insulting or something! Also, people complained about GIVING change. Like the penny in their pocket they are probably going to lose is worth too much to help someone.
I don't get things like that sometimes

what about you? Do you donate or not? Do you try to donate- like elbow your mom and be all "hey, mom, hey, give some money" but your mom is like "ew, no, donations *skips away*"

I donate to many organizations online, and sometimes I will donate to bell ringers, but it depends on how close to the door they are and whether or not they talk to me or not. If a bell ringer opens their mouth first and asks me to donate, I wont. I hate the fact that I might donate $100 online to some foundation, then go shopping somewhere with the little money I have left, and this bell ringer is making me feel guilty for not donating. The people who don't feel guilty are the ones who don't donate to anything, people without a conscience. So the bell ringers make good people feel bad. If you're a real good person or have a conscience, then you're going to feel guilty if you have $5 in your pocket and walk past a bell ringer and dont donate any of it. Plus its embarrassing if theres people around and they see you not donating, then you're "that jerk who didnt donate" for those few seconds you're out there. I hate how bell ringers play to peoples emotions like this. It may not be intentional, but thats the effect it has on me. If I see a bell ringer sitting right outside the door of a place so they are unavoidable when you come out, I wont even shop there. If I want to donate to something, Im going to search for organizations and find them on my own and donate to them. I dont like being solicited right after I just spent money in a store. They make it so that you feel guilty, because here you are, with enough money to buy something in the store, but not enough money to give them some, and if you live in a big city like me, they are everywhere. So if I go shopping at 5 stores, thats like 5 bell ringers I have to deal with. I think majority of them are a nuisance. If they are a good distance away from the door, and dont ask people to donate and just sit there with a sign, then I may donate to them. Plus anybody can make a sign and sit outside a door with a bell, so sometimes I can't even tell if it's a legit organization or just a scammer making his money for the day.

yes it makes me so sad to think what i get for christmas and what others who don't have any money that can't even afford a bowl of cereal. Every year me and my mom donate about 20 dollars to the guy at walmart

It annoys me when i mat the mall and im constantly hearign it, but when its outside it doesnt bother me. I dont always give money, but last time i saw one i did (:

Wow, that's crazy I've never heard of people complaining about the bell. I try to donate, but most of the time I don't carry cash on me.

dont mind donating some, but i dont like the looks you get if you dont. and every place you go there it is, so if i donated at every pot i pass i would be broke. good idea but way overkill. do they have to be everywhere?

Maybe you're not aware that most people actually don't have a penny in their pocket anymore. We use debit cards which take the money straight out of your bank account, so that you don't have to carry paper/coins around, or else people use credit cards.

So no, I don't donate. I don't have change. And I would rather donate to a cause of my own choice. Not a pushy one that rings a bell, using guilt, aggravating people's migraines in front of a store. I would rather donate to something that I felt strongly about.

Yes, we donate whenever we can. I donate whatever spare change I have in my pockets on the way in, then donate the change that I get from my purchase on the way back out. When the kids are with me, I ALWAYS give them some money to put in the buckets. Its important for us to teach them about charity and offering donations with a loving heart.

I usually donate as long as I have money. My dad volunteers to be a bell ringer a few times every year, and I've done it with him before. I think it's a nice thing to do.
