Sometimes it's funny and other times it's very unnessisary. There was the episode when Lisa turns into a buddist and they had that one guy (brain blank) come in and tell her the benifits of being a buddist but since then we havn't heard anything about Carl and Lenny's Buddism. Plus the Rock and Roll Camp ep. was pretty epic.
I think alot of the writers are forced to add in celeberites. They get an actor who wants to be in the simpsons, they pay them alot of money to write an episode for them, contracts are signed and then the writers slap on a bit camio and some cheep way to toss them in. When they get those dead end actors who arn't going anywhere or need more promotion on a new album or book coming out they pay the Simpsons to add them in.
I think the Weird Al ep is a good example of when they have a poor ep. they add a celeberty to boost it up. Al wrote a song for them and they just found an episode to toss him in with, even though the song had nothing to do with the episode. It's like saying "Hmm this episode isn't good enough to stand out on it's own, who can we get to fill up time?"
