Do you believe people's background matters when it comes to choosing close friends?

For example, if you see a nice young girl who has class and morals hanging around a drug addict who doesn't go to school or sleeps around, is that considered bad to society even though the person might not be that bad pesonality wise? And will people judge you thinking you are the same person?

I don't mind being friends with people who have different values as I do, but I just feel like being close to them would be rather...a risk? I just feel like things would clash one way or another since two people are too different. If you think about it, alot of people hang around another person who has same experiences and same beliefs. (drug addicts hang with drug addicts, nerds hang with nerds, good people hang with good people, educational people hang with educational people) etc.

Also, not to mention my family really dislikes this one friend of mine I hang out with. She's the type to sleep around and stuff and they think I won't learn anything from her if I always be around her.
So im wondering, what do u guys think?
