I mean it's just that he made some moves that hurt the team imo. The team would of been better off with Claude Julien as coach so he should never of been fired. He only got fired because Theodore had a bad year in 05-06 and when Gainey fired him, Gainey made himself the in-term coach and then traded Theo and the team played better and made the playoffs that year. He traded Mike Ribiero and he is a good offensive player, just as good as Alex Tanguay who they traded a 1st round pick for. They could of got a good young prospect with that pick. They shouldn't of let Sheldon Souray go, whenever they needed a big goal, he was the player who would score with his amazing slap shot from the point. Not only that, they gave up on Ron Hainsey, taking too many chances of sending him to the minors and going through waivers, instead of taking the time to develop Hainsey like they did with Komisarek. So is Bob Gainey a overrated as GM?

qwerty- Briere turned down Montreal's (Gainey's) offer which was more lucrative than the Philly deal........NEVER overpay anyone you were saying?!

I have to completely disagree with your comments - Everyone bashes Gainey when he makes one move that seems to be out of place. Every GM gets a 5 year-period to turn a team around (some are fired in the interim). The bottom line is that Gainey traded useless players (namely Cristobal Huet) away in exchange for draft picks which Trevor Timmins (the mastermind scout) was able to find gold. In the NHL - you build from the bottom up, starting with a solid foundation on defense, a god mix of leaders and youth, speed, size, and a future - and NEVER overpay for anyone. Without Gainey, none of this would be possible. Rejean Houle would still be at the helm screwing around giving the Habs a better chance at finishing 8th than becoming a contender.

The Habs have an outstanding foundation because of the system Gainey has put in place. There are only a handful of other proven GM's who can breed championships - Lou Lamoriello and Ken Holland come to mind.

Gainey will bring success to Montreal - on the wings of Carey Price. Watch out!

I think the farmer, Rejean Tremblay, should be GM. In reality he runs the team now.
