I studied the Puritans a long time ago, but I remember that they believed in the rightness of forcing everyone to adhere to their beliefs, with no tolerance for other beliefs. They believed all others were doomed to a very real Hell in which they'd suffer unspeakable torture. They believed that was right, for infractions which are not uncommon today, such as infidelity or bearing false witness (lying). They also believed in present day punishment, from banning (which often meant death from starvation or exposure) to the stocks to the dunking stool, IIRC.
