Do you agree with my history professor that the Puritans were like the Talibans?

I studied the Puritans a long time ago, but I remember that they believed in the rightness of forcing everyone to adhere to their beliefs, with no tolerance for other beliefs. They believed all others were doomed to a very real Hell in which they'd suffer unspeakable torture. They believed that was right, for infractions which are not uncommon today, such as infidelity or bearing false witness (lying). They also believed in present day punishment, from banning (which often meant death from starvation or exposure) to the stocks to the dunking stool, IIRC.

Sound like any groups active today?

I went to class today thinking that we were going to talk about what we read. Instead I get this revisionist type lecture that was based more on the instructor's gut feelings that were loosely based on the facts. He gave a lecture saying that the Puritans were whacko people that were very much like today's Taliban. Once he said that a person up front and mimicked his opinion saying the exact same opinion, exactly calling them "crazy" and "wierd" people. Does anyone else who studies Puritan religious and political ideology think that the Puritans were just like the Taliban?
