Do we debate for what is right or what we can justify?

If 2 people are arguing in a debate, is it because we want to be right, or is it that we want to be right, so we can justify our way of living?

And if there is no right or wrong, why do we attempt to justify our lives?

Depends on what's being debated and who I'm debating.

Take Bob G and his statement "There is no truly right or wrong."

This is clearly an insane point of view. By this standard child rape is a grey area. I don't debate crazy people.

Another area is Self Defense and National Defense. The debate ends when it comes to survival. These are areas where many on the left are simply delusional and not living in the real world. They mistake our constitution for a suicide pact. I will not follow them off that cliff. They can run their mouth all they want.

Like I said, it depends on what the debate is about.

There is no truly right or wrong. Instead, you have to measure ethical and long term gain or harm to the most people. I believe most people are actually good and want the best for everybody. But they differ on what is best and how to achieve it.

Akk, good question.

I try to debate only for sport, I've learned you can't debate to change people's mind, and debating for the purpose of looking for a fight is a waste of energy and time because it's feeding a negativity right from the start.

I try to do what I think is right. As a parent I do what I think is best for my family, for my children, for their future.

I am not so worried about being right. If I'm wrong I want to know so that I can stop being wrong and wasting my time.

Opinions are different, everyone has to go with what is in their hear, their gut, their head. It gets messy because everyone wants their opinion to be right, but no one stops to realize that you can't be. Your opinion can never be 100% right unless everyone believes it- no opinion, if it's truly just an opinion, is wrong.

I've learned two things in life:

1. Water the seeds, not the weeds.
2. Sometimes we make bad choices because they are the only ones we can live with.

I don't need to justify my way of living, I just need to go to sleep at night.

Both actually. Most people debate what they believe to be right. However in order for that to be considered right by others it must be justified. Debate should not be about just wanting to be right. It should be about your beliefs and passions. If you just want to be right your arguments will eventually become inconsistent.
