Do we blame the mass media for falsely advertising women?

The mass media in the 1950's falsely advertised the myth of a 'Happy Housewife" during that time. Are they entirely to blame. Why?
 
Who is to say that they weren't happy?

I want to be housewife. Being a dedicated mother is a wonderful thing.

Look at women today, they are so stressed out from having to work, take care of kids and clean the house. Perhaps women (and men) were happier when we lived in a more simple time.
