I noticed that many shows tend to be pretty episodic in the beginning of the series, where the stories start and end for the most part in one episode. But as the show goes along, at some point it gets more complex to the point that you have to watch the whole season in the order of its airdate to understand it. Do shows intentionally set out to do that, or is it a result of doing too many episodic storylines and running out of ideas because of it? Or is it just to try to retain the audience?
