Do tortilla chips make salsa go bad faster?

My parents always claim that when you dip tortilla chips directly into a container of salsa, it contaminates the whole container and makes it go bad faster. Is that true? ( I would actually think that the salt from the tortilla chips might help preserve it a little)

The chips will not, but a few reasons why Your parents may be right could be

If You dip a chip You took a bite out of. Called double dipping.

Your fingers may leave germs inside the jar.

And while You are eating, the jar may be open for a long time and get to warm, and catch germs floating in the air. Opened salsa must be refrigerated.

You or someone else may sneeze or cough near the open jar.

Parents usually give advice for a good reason. They been there, done that.
