Do Teams matter in EA Sports video games?

I own the EA Sports Madden 2010 video game. I also have the EA Sports soccer and hockey games. Does it matter what team I pick when I play these games? Or is the only thing that matters my level of skill? For example, if I'm a good video game player and I pick the Detroit Lions for my team, will I beat a weak player who picks the Pittsburgh Steelers?
 
I'd imagine it is just based on skill. I think EA tries to balance all of the teams for the most part, but still buff up other teams, based on the big star players they have, and the success that the team usually has, to make it more authentic.

But yeah.... I'm about to win the Stanley Cup on NHL10, as the Phoenix Coyotes :P
 
Both have a lot to do with it your skill and the team you pick. It just depends what your shooting for- winning with the underdog or an easy win with a good team.
