...two cultures? ? Why might people who speak two languages have cognitive advantages over those who speak only one?

Sometimes, 3 cultures, parents being of different ethnic groups and choosing to converse in one common language at home.
 
Probably because languages are so different that people who speak more than one are inherently are more cognitively capable in understanding the complexity and subtexts of both languages. They also understand two cultures, which opens their minds more for comparison.
