Do parent know what kids think of bicycle helmets/pads?

I know many kids who dislike them very much mostly because it blocks the wind, slows you down. I understand why some parents make kids wear a helmet while bicycling but making it a law in some states thats out of hand. I know how easy it is to hurt your self but when your riding the only way you will fall is by pure accident or just stupidness. A accident would be like your shoe lace got stuck in your pedals and you fall. The kid couldnt do anything to stop that. Stupidness would be not braking or stop pedaling in sharp turns, trying a stunt. If you teach your kid how to be safe then probably they will know how to ride safely. Also most kids peers do make fun of them wearing helmets ages 11 to 14. I understand wearing helmets for the younger ages 5 to 8.

Final question

Why are they making it a law to wear helmets

Is there such a law in Missouri

Did you ask your child if he or she wears a helmet how they feel about it
 
Things can and do often randomly happen. It isn't just a matter of "it's only going to happen if..." Too many are going to feel like it's not going to ever happen to them then, and that is a dangerous way to think.

Better idea... if parents are adamant that their child ride safely, with a helmet, then be sure the kid is at least able to pick out the one THEY want and would be willing to wear.

Even if it's a more costly but cool racing style helmet. If they agreed to wear it then it would be worth the price.
 
First of all why do you have to ask this?! Its pure common sense!! You make your kids wear helmets and ALL the padding when riding a bike. rollerblading, skate boarding etc.!! I make my daughter wear her gear and no she doesnt like it but guess what...it will help save her life if she falls and hits her head or falls off her bike and where the skinned knee would have been oh what do you know she was wearing her knee and elbow pads! It should be a law in ALL states!! Not only for children but for teenagers and adults to!
 
i know that my son (only 2 right now) wont like having to wear a helmet. it is not the law here, but if he doesn't like it, he doesn't get to ride his bike. id rather he get made fun of for having a helmet on then crack his head open.
 
I don't really care if they think it looks stupid or not...our friend's child got brain damage from NOT having a helmet on having a bad bike crash...and if Natasha Richardson had been wearing a helmet when she was SKIING ON THE BUNNY SLOPE she would be ALIVE NOW and TWO BOYS WOULD NOT BE WITHOUT THEIR MOTHER!

I listen to what my kids have to say, but not WEARING THE HELMET IS NOT AN OPTION-- it's not different to them than the seat belt rule: it is just a part of riding in the car. For them, the helmets are just a part of riding bikes. (They did wear pads when they were smaller, but as teens, they have the option of wearing/not wearing pads.)

Besides, Lance Armstrong is way cool, and HE WEARS HIS HELMET WITH NO COMPLAINTS!

I would never make out girls wear helmets and pads. They can learn to ride a bicycle without wearing tons of crazy stuff. If they fall, they won't die. It's much more dangerous if your shoe lace gets stuck in the pedals. Our older girl is 4 and she rides a bike and I don't make her wear anything additional. Why not make her wear a helmet while playing with kids outside? A meteor can fall and hit her head, right? Crazy idea...
 
Of course kids hate it. My parents were HORRIBLE and made me wear all the protective stupid gear and i hated it! But do you know how a parent feels when seeing their child do something that could kill them? Accidents happen. As a parent if you love and care about your child you do whatever you can to make sure that if an accident does happen your child doesn't become disabled for life or worse dead. If the kid whose shoe lace got stuck in his pedals flipped over his handle bars and landed on his head he could possible be a vegetable for life or die..if he was wearing protective gear he may get some bumps and bruises but he will be able to walk and will be alive.
Dont worry you will understand when you are a parent. My 7 yr old hates that she has to wear a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads on her electric scooter..but guess what like my parents i am horrible and just dont care how she feels about it because i love her and dont want her dead if there is something i can do to stop it!!
Oh and Im only 23 so I do still remember vividly how embarrassing a helmet was to wear!
 
So you're saying because kids might feel a bit uncomfortable or silly, they should take real risks? And parents should consider that they might feel weird with a helment and say they'd rather up the chance of brain damage so little Tommy doesn't feel awkward? If you feel that way don't ride a bike. I'm sure all parents know how kids sometimes don't like helmets, and they felt that way too, but that doesn't change the fact it's an extremely important protective measure on a bike. I have known a friend of a friend who basically had their life saved by the helmet because without it their head injury would have been massive. It does happen.

It is the law to wear helmets where I live, and almost everybody does it. I expect it is in Missouri as well.

Of course parents know that kids hate helmets. They want to protect their kids from injuries and death and not spend a lot of money on hospital bills, but kids find them uncool and will make fun of those with helmet calling them nerds and momma's boys. I was a kid not too long ago (I'm 21) and my mom made me wear a helmet when I was riding my bike and I hated it, but she knew what was right for me.
