My best friend jsut got hit by a car. The stupid driver was reaching for his cell phone and accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. His car ran onto the sidewalk and hit my best friend. For the record, he drives a 1998 Ford F-150. Yeah not a small car. She has a fractured pelvis, a broken leg, 2 cracked ribs and a fractured arm. All this because some fucking idiot wanted to talk on his goddamn cell phone.

You wanna hear whats worse. So her family asks the guy to pay half of the medical co-pay (NOTE not total cost just the co-pay). Despite such generosity, the guys wants to go to fucking court! WTF is wrong with him!!! Normally he would have to pay all the costs but no...just half the damn co-pay and he still wont pay. He was really nice after the accident but now he's being a straight up asshole. I really cant stand any of this legal bullshit. I am a reasonable teenager so I would not proceed to threaten him. But seriously, are the any suggestions as to what I could do?
 
Damn......that's gotta suck. I hate talking on my cell while I'm driving. I find it way to distracting, especially in city limits. But some people are just too busy to pull over or even shut their phone off while driving. There is this thing called call display so if the call is that important I'm sure they can call the person back. I hope your friend will be okay...sounds like a long road to recovery. I thought they made it illegal to talk on the phone while driving anyway. But then again I've seen the cops driving and chatting on the phone so I'm thinkin' they just don't care.
 
Its been found by various studies that even using a hands-free your reaction time slows. Its more the split of attention than the use of your hand that makes it bad.

Not using a cellphone while driving should be common sense, lots of people don't have it though.
 
That's fine, but as long as my state deems it legal I'll continue to do it.
Not really. You can use a earbud or other hands free kit pretty safely. I've done it for years, even before the new cell phone laws, and I've never even come close to wrecking or losing control. Furthermore, I don't think you should be one to judge common sense.
 
I deal with that on a daily basis... I've gotten hit once, just a couple scrapes, but I've almost gottem run over a couple times. Because in Florida, majority is always on their cell phone in the car. What the hell do they have to talk about so much so that they're always on it?
 
I'm familiar with that study, and it also says that your reaction time slows when talking to people in the car or having music/radio playing. Are you going to sit in complete silence while in your car?

I doubt it.
 
You are right, the radio slows your time as well, according to that study..but not as much as carrying on an intelligent conversation with somebody would. I may go back and read that study again tomorrow, as a refresher. But for now, I must sleep.
 
I dont think it illegal here in california. I see people do it all the time. But the guy was driving in a residential area and the roads are really narrow. I think I really depends on whrer you are driving. I mean you can fall asleep in I-5 and not hit anything for about an houw.
 
no offense, but i think it's you, not hte people on their cell phones. because the majority of people i know, and im sure this goes for everyone, have never come close to being hit by a car. you seam to have it happen to you daily...

my advice: wear bright colors and get a special helper
 
Yeah, really. I've been driving for about the same amount of time. I don't need someone who has been driving for less than two years to tell me what's safe and not. I've been driving and using my cell for years and never had any accidents, close calls or anything of the sort. I'm safe about it though, and always use the hands free kit.

So, in conclusion, if you're 17, need to use biased facts and half-truths to prove your point, and lack driving experience, then just keep your mouth shut when around adults. :)
 
Women putting on their make up, guys shaving and people spanking their children while driving bother me more than cell phones. I'm fairly sure it's safe to say that using a proper hands free kit is relatively safe. I'm also fairly certain it's safe to assume that a good bit of research has went into this decision, as most states have OK'd their use.
