Requesting Downloads is NOT Allowed

Perhaps it would be good to have a sticky thread at the top of every forum that contains "Teh Rules" and has a title like "FUCK THE RULES"

Ok, nevermind what I said about AMVs. Seeing as how so many people post links to them anyway, I'll allow them. Heck, I even made some DBZ and Gundam Wing ones when I was younger. And personally, I think AMVs rock (once saw a really funny DBZ one to DMX's What's My Name >_

How about, "Read and obey the rules or be banned?"

Requesting Downloads is NOT Allowed

Yes but what if it's really expensive, and you can get them for free online? cough*Doki Doki School Hours*cough

Thank you very much, Bamboo! :D

Maybe this will finally get the message across to these idiots that willfully abuse the forums to do something that is illegal. I know everyone (including me) is getting tired of reminding people to read the rules before posting anything.

But then again, there's no guarantee that they will be reading this thread. :?

Heh, then at least half of us wouldn't be here. After looking at Teh Rules again, I've noticed that lot of us have violated even the tiniest of details like going off topic (a lot), excessively quoting, the lack of proper English (grammar and such), commerce not confined to the Retail Forum, and a little bit of swearing (though I don't really give a **** about it :P).

Licensed. ;_;
No you didn’t

If it's licensed, you should definitely buy it, no matter how expensive (it's both bad ethics, and plain tacky not to. That’s just plain stealing in broad day-light. Would you steal DVD’s from a store?)

(When it's not yet licensed it's an entirely different debate I'm not getting into. >_>
That’s a touchy subject)

You shouldn’t be watching anime you're not willing to buy when it's available.
You shouldn’t be watching fansubbs when the anime is licensed AT ALL.
If you like something, and it gets licensed. You stop downloading (if you are) and buy it.
That’s how it works.

Also, it’s even more illegal when it’s licensed.

Well, at least it'll be easier to link this thread than going through the other forum and finding "Teh Rules" thread.

Fansubs are illegal?

Yes they are. It's illegal to download anime or manga because a title may be licensed. I think you would want to take a look at my post on the thread dealing with both illegal fansubs and Bandai forbidding it.

in that thread said:
How will fansubbers get caucht you ask? Well many of the larger licensers have programs named after some eight-legged bugs called "spiders" that surf the web constantly for their content. They do it by searching for certain keywords. Then when the spiders find illegal clips, they will track the fansubbers down from their computer and sue them.

Well, follow the rules within reason, of course. I don't think the mods are out to make sure the letter of the law is enforced to a "t," or that they even want to try to enforce the rules that stringently--their work would probably never end. Going a little off-topic seems to be all right, sporadically, so long as it remains intelligent discussion. Quoting the quote of the quote of the quote of someone is lazy in many cases, justified in a few. Grammar-wise, the majority of people here aren't English majors--"proper grammar" might be interpreted as "at least try to sound like an intelligent person." Can't say much about the commerce/Retail forum, since I rarely notice anything of the sort. And for swearing, well, it seems that excessive profane language is what will get you in trouble. One "average" swear every now and then flies low enough under the radar, I think.

Where did the false notion come from that downloading is somehow "more legal" (or, in extreme cases, "completely legal") when a series is unlicensed? (morality is a different issue I don't want to get into). It's the same illegal whether a title is licensed or not, it's just more likely that an American licensor will get on the fansubbers' cases when they sub licensed titles.

If that were true, than watching illegal fansubs and commiting murder would be the same thing.

You're being silly. Severity and legality are two different things. A murderer or a rapist is much more heinous than a petty little teenager wanting to watch free cartoons, yes. BUT they are both still illegal, plain and simple. There is no "how illegal is it?," but rather there's "it's illegal, period, but how horrific are its consequences?" You're trying to claim one is the other, and you're just sounding ridiculous for it.

There's either legal or illegal, nothing in-between.

By popular demand, and because of the sudden rash of rule-breakers, we now have a nice announcement thread to reminds users that requesting downloads of any kind on ANN is strictly forbidden. (Unless you want trailers or something. That's a different story.)

So, for those who haven't read Teh Rules (which I highly recommend), know full well that all threads asking for downloads will be locked, and the user may be banned if deemed necessary.

Addendum: Requesting information about sites that legally provide downloads/streaming anime, etc, is permitted. Exampless include Total Vid, etc...

[Zalis-edit] However, do NOT ask for links to watch any anime, licensed or unlicensed, in streaming-video form for free. (Unless they are official and authorized by a production or licensee company.) That is the equivalent of asking for download links, and will be dealt with in the same way. Do not bother asking "How come they took ****** off Youtube, where can I find it?" All you'll get is a nice padlock on your thread, with maybe a smart remark or two as a bonus.[/edit]

(And while we're at it, no list posts!! Please folks, if you're going to mention a list of favorites or recommendations, please say why you're choosing them. I hate having to delete all y'alls list posts so let's keep that to a minimum, eh?)

can we post links to fansites of our favorite anime?
Add them in "Links" of the specific title; don't post them in the forum. Furthermore, don't just add ANY fansite saying "OH THIS ROCKS ANYBODY ELSE;" submit only the finest fansite that is both informational and well-designed. There's Google if we want EVERY fansite out there.

Fuyu, it's not so much the act of downloading that people are against. I think it's more so the act of requesting links and such to download from, particularly on this site.

ANN is a credible and very intricate website that posts all sorts of news and information concerning anime. However, since downloading is obviously illegal ANN witholds the right to filter out that kind of information, which in my eyes, shows the integrity all of the ANN staff has in just providing what the name says, "Anime News," meaning they won't host a bunch of illegal fansub or mp3 links.

People can download all they want, that's their choice. But to respect the stature and dignity of ANN, it would be best to keep every bit of information on the site as legal and hassle free as possible (meaning all of that stuff mentioned in rule #10).

[sarcasim]Holy crap, dude! You really need to let the RIAA know about this pronto! Maybe they'll give all that money back to the people they fined for downloading music when they realize what a horrible mistake they made![/sarcasim]
