Do multilingual people have an advantage in that they can get news from other sources?

For example, an American who speaks Spanish can read newspapers and watch news/listen to radio from Spain and Latin America; an American who speaks fluent Portuguese can get news from other sources, namely Brazil, Portugal and several Portuguese-speaking nations in Africa; if he also speaks French, he can get his news from Canada, France and several African nations. Isn't that a good enough reason to learn other languages so that you're not dependent on either "the liberal media" or FOX News for your information?
